Independent Assortment and Gene Linkage Lab - Dragon Genetics Free Student Handout
Free Teacher Notes
Lab
Students learn the principles of independent assortment and gene linkage in activities that analyze the inheritance of multiple genes on the same or different chromosomes in hypothetical dragons. The concepts of independent assortment of chromosomes during meiosis and random fertilization are modeled with linked genes.NGSS Standard

Macromolecule Lab - Organic Compound Mystery Free Student Handout
Free Teacher Notes
Lab
In this macromolecule lab, students learn about the three food-based biomolecules by testing for triglycerides, glucose, starch, and proteins. Students will use indicator solutions like test strips, paper bag stain test, iodine, and Biuret solution. Students experiment on the following mystery substances: vegetable oil, glucose, corn starch, powdered egg whites, and water.NGSS Standard

Enzyme Lab Free Lesson Plan (PDF)
Lesson Plan (DOCX) & Answer Key with Membership
Lab
In this enzyme lab, students will discover the effects temperature, pH, and substrate concentration has on enzyme activity. Students will experiment on the enzyme catalase in different foods to determine its qualitative rate of reaction. This enzyme lab asks students to transfer the enzyme activity concepts in this experiment to homeostasis in organisms.NGSS Standard

Demystifying Punnett Squares Simulation Free Multimedia
Lab
In the simulation, students breed pairs of mice with different fur colors and observe the phenotypic ratios in the resulting offspring. Students select one breeding pair from the nest to investigate the ratios of fur color phenotypes, genotypes, and sex. Students then click “breed”. After each parent pair breeding, the resulting litter of offspring is shown, along with a pie chart, which updates to display the ratios in the total number of offspring for those parent mice.
Example questions to ask students:
Why do some of the pie charts change as you breed the mice?
Why do the pie charts stabilize?
Where are the numbers different from the ratios in Punnett Square? Where are they the same?NGSS Standard

Population Growth Rates Lab Free Lesson Plan (PDF)
Lesson Plan (DOCX) & Answer Key with Membership
Lab
A fun predator prey activity that focuses on removal of a limiting factor and how that affects the resilience of the prey population and its environment. Students participate in an activity that models a population of rabbits. Students learn how density-dependent factors affect a population size.NGSS Standard
